“Death will come and will have your eyes” Cesare Pavese

Moving in the sphere of “romantic eroticism”, the visual artist Linda Paoli takes us on a journey through the fiery worlds of the distinguished Italian poet Cesare Pavese, those sworn to serve the purest “love” that sometimes resembles “life” and sometimes becomes “death”. “Love”, the purest, the irrational, the fearless and the sinless. This invincible charmer of the soul and mind, full of light and darkness, breaks the rules and becomes a “battle” and a “revolution”, against limitations, stereotypes and prejudices. He becomes a vigilant guard and an unarmed warrior who fights for “everything” or for “nothing”. It becomes a determinant of “existence” itself, in its most undisclosed, hidden and unconfessed depths.

Using the watercolor technique, her creative instinct and her imagination as her expressive means, Linda Paoli immerses herself in the flame of the verses and succeeds in giving “soul” to the poet’s Linda Paoli protagonists. Thus, she presents them to us incarnate, with their forms defined by their outlines and their “souls” shaken by the “passions” of “love”; and we feel as we look at them their “heart” that uncontrollably “beats”. Human figures, young women and men, with the nudity of their bodies symbolizing the stripping of their souls, have surrendered to the battles of “love”, the insurmountable, the guileless, the fatal and the most destructive.

Nostalgia and reminiscence for the dream that was lost, like smoke from a cigarette that goes out. Time stopped. End of the journey. Compass to zero. Thought travels. Escapes to memories left on wet sheets. Hugs and caresses. Bodies that unite in the light. Glory of love in its “reds”. Separation is an open wound. It drips blood and has the gaze of “death”. It has the gaze of the people we loved. And the people we loved have the gaze of “death” too. The “love” ultimately the most “pure” is “life” and “death” together.

“Ο θάνατος θα έρθει και θα έχει τα μάτια σου” Cesare Pavese

Κινούμενη στην σφαίρα του “ρομαντικού ερωτισμού”, η εικαστικός Linda Paoli, μας ταξιδεύει στους πύρινους κόσμους του διακεκριμένου Ιταλού ποιητή Cesare Pavese, τους ορκισμένους να υπηρετούν τον πιο καθάριο “έρωτα” που άλλοτε μοιάζει με “ζωή” και άλλοτε γίνεται “θάνατος”. Ο “έρωτας”, ο πιο αγνός, ο δίχως λογική, ο τρανός, ο άδειλος και αναμάρτητος. Ο ακατανίκητος αυτός γητευτής της ψυχής και του νου, ο γεμάτος φως και σκοτάδι, σπάει τους κανόνες και γίνεται “μάχη” και “επανάσταση”, κόντρα στους περιορισμούς, στα στερεότυπα και τις προκαταλήψεις. Άγρυπνος φρουρός και άοπλος πολεμιστής γίνεται που μάχεται για το “όλα” ή για το “τίποτα”. Γίνεται προσδιοριστής της ίδιας της “ύπαρξης”, στα πιο αφανέρωτα, κρυφά και ανεξομολόγητα της βάθη.

Αξιοποιώντας ως εκφραστικά της μέσα την τεχνική της ακουαρέλας, το δημιουργικό ένστικτο και την φαντασία της, η Linda Paoli, βυθίζεται στην φλόγα των στίχων και πετυχαίνει να δώσει “ψυχή” στους πρωταγωνιστές του ποιητή. Έτσι λοιπόν, μας τους παρουσιάζει ενσαρκωμένους, με τις μορφές τους Linda Paoli ορισμένες από τα περιγράμματα τους και τις “ψυχές” τους συγκλονισμένες από τα “πάθη” του “έρωτα”• και νιώθουμε όπως τους κοιτάζουμε την “καρδιά” τους που ανεξέλεγκτα “χτυπά”. Ανθρώπινες φιγούρες, νεαρές γυναίκες και άντρες, με την γυμνότητα του σώματος τους να συμβολίζει την απογύμνωση της ψυχής τους, έχουν παραδοθεί στα παλέματα του “έρωτα”, του ανυπέρβλητου, του άδολου, του μοιραίου και του πιο καταστροφικού.

Νοσταλγία και αναπόληση για το όνειρο που χάθηκε, σαν καπνός ενός τσιγάρου που σβήνει. Ο χρόνος σταμάτησε. Τέλος διαδρομής. Πυξίδα στο μηδέν. Ταξιδεύει η σκέψη. Δραπετεύει σε θύμησες αφημένες σε υγρά σεντόνια. Αγκαλιά και χάδι. Σώματα που ενώνονται στο φως. Δόξα του έρωτα στα “κόκκινα” του. Ανοιχτή πληγή ο αποχωρισμός. Στάζει αίμα και έχει το βλέμμα του “θανάτου”. Έχει το βλέμμα των ανθρώπων που αγαπήσαμε. Και οι άνθρωποι που αγαπήσαμε έχουν το βλέμμα του “θανάτου” κι αυτοί. Ο “έρωτας” τελικά ο πιο “καθάριος” είναι “ζωή” και “θάνατος” μαζί.

Artist Statement

“My works inspired by the poems of Cesare Pavese, in particular, from the collection book Verrà la morte e avrà i tuoi – Death will come and will have your eyes.

I decided to celebrate this important italian writer because he tells about the primitive aspect of the interpersonal relationship and the sexuality that comes out forcefully within his poem’s verses.

Love is hard and the Paternity is described from conception to birth. Love encounters burn as a cigarette but leave an impression, that we can see, in the mind of the poet.”
